First, is the compound ionic or molecular? If the compound is ionic, does the metal form ions of only one type (fixed charge) or more than one type (variable charge)? Are the ions monatomic or polyatomic? If the compound is molecular, does it contain hydrogen? If so, does it also contain oxygen? From the answers we derive, we place the compound in an appropriate category and then name it accordingly. To name an inorganic compound, we need to consider the answers to several questions. The rules for organic compounds, in which carbon is the principle element, will be treated in a later chapter on organic chemistry. We will limit our attention here to inorganic compounds, compounds that are composed principally of elements other than carbon, and will follow the nomenclature guidelines proposed by IUPAC. The simplest of these are binary compounds, those containing only two elements, but we will also consider how to name ionic compounds containing polyatomic ions, and one specific, very important class of compounds known as acids (subsequent chapters in this text will focus on these compounds in great detail). This module describes an approach that is used to name simple ionic and molecular compounds, such as NaCl, CaCO 3, and N 2O 4. Nomenclature, a collection of rules for naming things, is important in science and in many other situations. Derive names for common types of inorganic compounds using a systematic approach.By the end of this section, you will be able to:

Each party member has their own "spot" that they can be found at, specific to each character in each town. You then scour the town, looking for your party members. You enter towns and have your party separate and go to relax on their own, leaving you with just the MC. Case in point, the Private Action system. Getting a party of what you want playing the first time 100% requires a guide There are interesting non-combat systems, but they are some combination of: hidden, require multiple playthroughs, or will not be understood without reading a guide (all Tri-Ace classics). Some general things I liked:+All the shops have names and I think the NPC writing/world building is above-average +Item creation and the non-combat skills have great depth+Aside from some weirdness with Ilia's voice, I'd say most of the party members' voice work is above average. +There's a big pool of recruitable characters and you can't have them all in one playthrough, so there's good replay value And some more minuses:-The bosses in the first 3/4ths of the game are QUITE generic and have little narrative impact over being an obstacle-NPC voicing ranges from ok to not great -Character recruitment is a crapshoot. The ones that do alter gameplay are superfluous. Few of the combat skills alleviate this either, and really just add a bunch of proc effects. So combat boils down to using your 1 or 2 AoE specials on normal encounters, and the ones with the least endlag/most hits to stunlock bosses. Most characters don't really have many specials without a ton of endlag, and generally the higher level or steps it takes to unlock a special, the laggier it is. Once you can meet the stat check you just apply the same optimal strategy as the rest of the game. Sure, there are bonus bosses for a "real challenge" but those just require preparation. You can try playing a spellcaster character if you want, but the damage doesn't scale well compared to martial characters, and the game COMPLETELY pasues for every single spell. Even if you don't know how to unlock the most abusable specials, stunlocking enemies is trivial. I encountered many of Y-axis issues, with my character running around aimlessly trying to find a place to attack while next to an enemy. The battles being 3D instead of 2D doesn't add a great deal. The inability to equip more specials, input block, or alter your 3-hit normal attack makes the combat extremely repetitive and auto-piloty. Optimal combat involves stun-locking enemies with your basic 3-hit combo into one of your 2 (lol) equipped specials in battle. The unmodded game lacking difficulty settings does not help this, but the combat has problems that wouldn't be solved but adding more health and damage to enemies. 41h 37m PlayedThe big elephant in the room for this game is the combat: it's far too easy, and generally unengaging. I like a simple clock with few features - I just need to be able to clearly see the time. Helpful review: “The ability to set my phone down on the top of this clock and have it charge at night or while I am getting ready for the day is so convenient, rather than trying to find a charging cord. The clock is available in three wood tones - white, black, and dark brown - so you can choose the look that works best with your decor. Plus, reviewers reported that you can set the clock to either 12- or 24-hour time. The display also shows the relative humidity and ambient temperature, and you can toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius. The alarm volume is adjustable, and the dimmable display has three brightness levels. Compatible with all Qi-enabled devices, it has three alarms, a snooze button if you need a few more minutes of sleep, and a weekend setting that lets you sleep in even later. Point attracted up to 4,000 users in a 48-hour period after being featured on the site, and Krishnaswamy and his friends were able to find a mobile app developer. “We didn’t have friends who could make introductions to us.”īut in August, one of his investors, who is based in Detroit, pitched Point to Product Hunt, and the site was one of the day’s biggest hits. “We weren’t too involved in the tech space,” he said. That’s what happened to Ashwinn Krishnaswamy, who was working on Point with friends in Audubon, Pennsylvania, 35 miles outside of Philadelphia. Product Hunt now “is the place they come to present. “If your product is cool, you don’t have to be in San Francisco,” he said. While there is a steady flow of products coming from the San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles regions, up to 45 percent of submissions are coming from outside the country, said Erik Torenberg, a member of Product Hunt’s founding team. Product Hunt’s major achievement has been opening up Silicon Valley’s closed network a bit more to outsiders. Two handy products I found are Unsubscriber for Gmail, for unsubscribing to all the email lists I’m on, and Point, a Chrome extension that allows one to send someone a link to an article with comments already embedded in the margins. On Product Hunt, the useful is mixed together with the frivolous. The community and Product Hunt staff also curate “collections,” groups of similar kinds of applications or technologies around a theme such as parenting, running, reading and many more. Many days include several hundred new offerings, and the products’ creators frequently jump into the discussion around his or her invention.Īt the end of the day, the community’s votes determine the day’s top products, which Product Hunt publishes in an email newsletter before 8 a.m. Anyone on Product Hunt can “upvote” products a la Reddit, which will send them higher on each day’s list. Here’s how it works: Anyone can post a product to be reviewed and Product Hunt has a group of entrepreneurs and product enthusiasts that curate the top choices. New technology by big companies like Google are also on the site. It has become a place to drop in on industry insider conversations on product design or marketing. Since its inception, nearly 14,000 products have been featured on the Product Hunt homepage.īut if it was all laughs, Product Hunt wouldn’t grow as it has. There are now Product Hunt meetups worldwide, as far away as Istanbul and Singapore. Product Hunt is the brainchild of Ryan Hoover, who acts as the cheerleader for entrepreneurial creativity, a sort of Allen Ginsberg to the startup generation.Ī little more than a year old, Product Hunt recently secured $6.1 million from Andreessen Horowitz - the San Francisco company’s biggest investment so far - and this month was honored as the best new startup of 2014 at The Crunchies, the tech industry’s Oscars. It’s something bigger - a window into the feverish creative activity happening every day in tech. It is not a review site or a place to find the top 10 apps for your iPhone. These products and thousands of others can be found on Product Hunt, an online site that acts as a hub for new apps, websites and other creations. Or Borro, an online lending platform that uses luxury cars, antiques and jewelry as collateral.Īnd then there is the Xoo, a designer belt that charges your phone battery while keeping your pants up. Or Mindie, for making your own seven-second music videos. Maybe you have use for Heal, a mobile app that connects people with doctors who make house calls, sort of an Uber for health care. Just spend a few minutes each evening reflecting on the day until you think of three good things. Research suggests that thinking of and listing three good things each day can contribute to increased happiness in the short term and longer term (Seligman, Steen, Park, & Peterson, 2005).Įven better, this exercise is simple to do. Practice finding the good in the difficult scenarios or think about the advice that you would give the characters to make themselves feel better.Īfter practicing this for a while, try to use this same strategy in your life by thinking about how difficult situations actually can have benefits or teach you important lessons (Troy, Wilhelm, Shallcross, & Mauss, 2010). You can practice cognitive reappraisal in a few different ways. Here are a few: Cognitive reappraisal exerciseĬognitive reappraisal is the act of reframing a situation to see it in a more positive light. To cultivate positive thinking skills, there are several helpful exercises you can try. Future-focused positive thinking can not only help us feel better in the moment, but it can also lead to better outcomes (Rasmussen, Scheier, & Greenhouse, 2009).Īttempting to improve our skills for each of these three types of positive thinking strategies can help us build this skill and improve our wellbeing. We hold more positive expectations about the future or focus on the good things to come rather than the bad. When we think positive thoughts about the future, we try to stay optimistic. When we think positively about the present moment, we might pay attention to what’s going well (rather than what’s not going so well), or we might try to shift our perspective on our present circumstances by reframing the situation or looking for silver linings.īy using these present-focused positive thinking strategies, we give ourselves more control over how we feel even in challenging situations. These past-focused positive thinking strategies can help us feel better in the present moment even if the present moment is challenging. We might bring those positive memories to mind, reflect on what we learned, or feel grateful for the good stuff (Quoidbach, Mikolajczak, & Gross, 2015). When we think positively about the past, we may reminisce on the good things that have happened. So take a moment to explore the following positive thinking techniques and strategies. The purpose of the Escape Line was to locate downed Allied pilots before the Nazis could get them and then provide them safe passage over the mountains and into Spain where they could then be sent back to rejoin their units and continue the fight against Hitler. The spirit of those people were what really made the book for me, especially those who worked on the “Escape Line” that is featured prominently throughout the novel. My favorite part of The Room on Rue Amelie was its focus on all of the regular citizens of Paris and surrounding areas and the subtle and not-so-subtle ways that they defied Hitler and the Nazis. I was drawn to The Room on Rue Amelie primarily because the synopsis indicates it would be a great read for fans of Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale and Martha Hall Kelly’s The Lilac Girls and in many respects, I was not disappointed with the comparison. The Room on Rue Amelie is a riveting story about resistance, courage, and defiance in the face of seemingly impossible odds, and it’s also a moving story about love, fate, family, and the sacrifices we’re willing to make for those we love. The unexpected connection he makes with them reignites his will to fight and he’s more motivated than ever to defeat the Nazis. That is, until he meets Ruby and Charlotte. He has joined the RAF because he wants to protect England from Hitler and the Nazis but when his mother is killed in the Blitz, Thomas begins to doubt that anything he is doing is making a difference and questions whether it’s worth it to keep fighting. Thomas Clark is a British Royal Air Force Pilot. Soon after, Charlotte and her family realize that all of the rumors they’ve been hearing about Hitler and the Nazis are true, as mass deportations begin and their lives are torn apart. Sure enough, as soon as the Nazis enter Paris, they begin imposing restrictions on the Jewish people, forcing them out of work and also requiring them to sew yellow stars on all of their clothing. They have been hearing rumors about what the Nazis are doing to Jews throughout Eastern Europe. Next door to Ruby and Marcel live Charlotte Dacher and her family, who are Jewish. When Marcel is unexpectedly killed, Ruby discovers what he has been so secretive about. The tension and the secrecy begin to take a toll on their marriage. Her dreams are soon shattered, however, as the Nazis invade France and everything changes, including Marcel, who becomes secretive and who also disappears for days at a time, only to come back and refuse to tell Ruby where he has been or what he is up to. She and Marcel move to Paris and Ruby dreams of walking hand in hand in the most romantic city in the world. Kristin Harmel’s The Room on Rue Amelie takes place in Nazi-occupied Paris in WWII and follows the lives of three people whose lives unexpectedly cross paths during the course of the war: Ruby Benoit, an American woman living in Paris, Charlotte Dacher, a Jewish teen who lives next door to Ruby, and Thomas Clark, a British RAF pilot who is flying missions over France.Īs the novel opens, Ruby meets and marries the man of her dreams, Marcel, a handsome Frenchman. Published by Gallery Books on March 27th 2018įTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley. (Mar.Also by this author: The Forest of Vanishing Stars This is a celebration of those, like Ruby, who found the courage to face life head-on. Harmel’s emotionally fraught story hammers home the message that each person has a unique opportunity to stand against injustice. The third major point of view comes from tender-hearted, attractive RAF pilot Thomas Clarke, who helps Ruby’s story progress but is insufficiently fleshed out on his own. Unfortunately, the second narrator, Ruby’s young Jewish neighbor Charlotte Dacher, receives wobbly treatment, with a narrative voice that never quite lands. Harmel treats this subject with great care although Ruby’s story is set in the past, the values by which she lives feel current. Ruby’s story’s emotional core is her struggle to establish her own identity and help others who are less fortunate, despite the growing dangers to herself. Swept off her feet and into a whirlwind marriage (and relocation to Paris), Ruby quickly learns that her storybook romance may be spoiled by external forces as Europe topples into war. On a damp, blustery afternoon in 1930s New York, Ruby Henderson meets a handsome Frenchman in a cafe. Harmel ( The Sweetness of Forgetting) injects new life into a well-worn story in this hopeful three-voiced tale about the struggle to find normalcy amid the horrors of WWII. |
